Guy Cunningham’s expertise in commentating live and streamed roller derby events has been integral to the growth of the sport not only in Victoria, but Australia wide. Over the past 10 years Guy has volunteered his time at games, tournaments, featuring in roller derby movies and hosting fund raisers to support roller derby at local, national, and international level for various Australian teams, including Victorian
Roller Derby League (VRDL) and Team Australia.
Guy’s commentating has been widely sought after at major national derby events such as The Great Southern Slam, which is held in Adelaide every two years. Guy’s knowledge of the game and time devoted to getting to know not only players, but other commentators and support staff carries through these events to reinforce team and player morale as they compete.
Guy’s dedication to the development and success of Australian roller derby has taken him abroad internationally to support the VRDL All Stars (currently ranked #2 in the world) competing at the Womens Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) World Championships. Guy’s continued support for the VRDL All Stars in 2017 at local events helped the Australian roller derby community get behind the VRDL All Stars as they won the WFTDA World Championships in Philadelphia.
Guy was also fortunate to be selected to commentate for the Roller Derby World Cup 2018 in Manchester, England. Through his clear mastery of commentating the sport, Guy secured a position to commentate live for the grand final game between Team Australia and Team USA which was the closest scoring World Cup grand final to date.
More recently, as various countries navigate through the pandemic, Guy has been commentating for WFTDA remotely through live stream games across the globe. Whether it be at live events, or streaming online, Guy’s approach is always professional and inclusive.
As a player for Team Australia and a player, Captain and Coach for the VRDL All Stars, I applaud and admire Guy Cunninghams professionalism and competency in providing such memorable experiences commentating amateur roller derby across the globe.
Thank you.

Guy’s Australian Roller Derby Career

Starting back in 2011, announcing for the South Sea Roller Derby, Guy joined as a bit of fun, but soon became a mainstay of the league and the sport in general. As Roller Derby started to escalate in Melbourne and become it’s own little niche community so too did the events. In 2012 the Roller Derby feature film “Murderdrome” was created in which Guy was one of the credited actors, and then went on to host his own television show “Power Jam” on Melbourne’s channel 31 for 2 years. Moving to VRDL to commentate in 2016, and announcing for major tournaments like The Great Southern Slam, Bendigo Rebellion, Black and Blue bouts and many, many more in between. Being chosen to call for Australia at the Roller Derby World Cup in 2018 and then selected to commentate the grand final between USA and Australia was perhaps the highlight of his announcing career. Guy has been a big part of Roller Derby in Australia during it’s resurgence and has now found a place commentating games coming out of the pandemic on WFTDA’s (World Flat Track Derby Association) twitch channel.
